CONVENTIONAL station wagons, as a breed, might be on the decline but a number of European car-makers are still working on providing convincing solutions to the problem of mixing car-like dynamics with above-average utility. The Citroen C5 Estate is a case in point. It’s a quite big, useful wagon that also offers plenty of comfort and space for passengers. The fluid suspension makes it one of the best-riding in its class, yet it is also quite handy on tight, winding roads. The HDi version adds another element that will – and already is – becoming an increasingly thought about aspect of new-car buying, and that is fuel economy. Like the turbo-diesel C5 HDi sedan on sale here since June 2001, the C5 HDi Estate wagon (released late 2003) offers the possibility of stretching fuel stops to something like 1000km on a long trip, yet it will still truck along at legal highway speeds with the best of them. Just don’t ask it to streak away at the traffic lights.
