Producing more non-turbo power than anyone has a right to, the S2000 two-seat convertible spectacularly displayed Honda engine technology when it launched here in 1999. Coaxing 176kW/208Nm out of two litres remains an impressive feat. More impressive is the flexibility -- Honda's VTEC technology combines low-speed torque with high-speed power extraction. Revving as high as 9000rpm, the engine will also pull from quite low rpm, with 175Nm available from 2000rpm. Minimalist inside -- there's air-conditioning and four-speaker audio but no clock -- the S2000 remains among the purest of sports cars. ABS, dual airbags and rollover protection are the main players in S2000's safety armoury.
