Today's Nissan Patrol is unrecognisable from the two-door soft-top, three-speed model that plied the outback in the 1970s. But, despite today's sophistication, the big Nissan has always remained true to the belief that 4WDs should always be able to go bush. Now, the Patrol is sold mainly as a seven-seat wagon, although a base DX model, and cab-chassis variants, exist. In the 3.0-litre turbodiesel only DX, equipment levels equate the workhorse nature: The wheels are either tough split-rim steel or, on auto versions, spoked steel. Dual airbags, limited-slip differential, manual front hubs, vinyl floor, air-conditioning and a basic two-speaker radio/CD player are the starting points.
