Subaru has been into SUVs since the 4WD Sportswagon favoured by the 1980s ski fraternity. The first dedicated SUV was the Forester, in 1997 - now matured into a refined, spacious and capable full-time 4WD wagon sitting at the top of its segment. Manual five-speed and four-speed auto transmissions are available, as well as two 2.5-litre horizontally opposed engines: a 126kW/229Nm SOHC, or the top-shelf XT’s 169kW/320Nm DOHC turbo. The XS versions adds 16-inch alloys, automatic climate control, a splash of woodgrain and an upmarket six-speaker, six-CD audio to base X specification.
