Volvo’s XC70 SUV, like Audi’s AllRoad, stems from a more pedestrian station wagon but has a jacked-up suspension, more aggressive bodywork, an added five-cylinder turbodiesel option and a computer-controlled Haldex 4WD system supported by hill-descent control. It partly underscores Volvo’s “SUV-company” role today. The normally aspirated 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine develops 175kW and 320Nm and drives through a standard six-speed Geartronic auto transmission. The six-cylinder LE model adds front and rear parking sensors, a power front passenger’s seat, power sunroof, 18-inch alloys and a six-disc CD audio to base XC70 equipment.
