The Malaysian-built Gen 2 Proton approaches small hatchbacks in size, and just nips at the upper levels of the light class in price. Introduced here in 2004, the neatly styled five-door hatch is powered universally by a twin-cam, 16-valve 1.6-litre engine developing 82kW and 148Nm and offering five-speed manual or four-speed auto transmission options. The Gen 2 gets the usual split-fold back seat to enhance the load area, plus adequate space for four adult passengers. Not exactly luxury level, the H Line nevertheless brings supplementary side airbags, parking sensors and a rear spoiler above M Line specification.
